Chelsea Boss Maresca Rejects Manchester City Speculation as Pure Rumour
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded fresh talk connecting him with a return to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The 45-year-old, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding his future.
Maresca, named Chelsea manager in the summer of 2024, has a contract that runs until 2029, with a possible extension option.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is little room for such distractions."
He went on to explain, Primarily, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my attention, I said many times, is solely on this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was connected to Juventus in Italy. So I ignore it because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, currently sitting fourth in the top flight, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT kick-off.
Strain Following Recent Remarks
Maresca's latest statement follow after he referred to a previous 48-hour period as his most difficult since arriving at Chelsea.
Those original words had sparked widespread speculation of a possible rift between the coach and the club's key decision-makers.
When asked if he had since spoken with the club's sporting directors, Maresca responded, "We are in the same building, so we talk about different things. But about the Everton media session, no."
The Italian did confirm he would "absolutely" remain at the club for the coming campaign and called on the fans to keep backing the team".
In brighter news, Maresca indicated that injured forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return sooner than expected, possibly available for a fixture against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: Unresolved Tension
The perceived strain between Maresca and the club's hierarchy remains as an open wound that continues to cause concern.
While there has been no deepening of the matter in the open, there has also been no resolution offered, leaving the matter unresolved.
The atmosphere during the manager's press conferences has grown notably awkward, leading to concerns it could impact what has up to now been a decent start to the season.
Chelsea's sporting situation is strong: they are fourth in the league, have reached the League Cup semi-finals, and can secure a better European position with strong performances in their remaining games.
The lingering question is whether this behind-the-scenes dynamic might begin to disrupt a team that was just starting to appear settled.
